5 SURVIVAL TIPS FOR SMES

COVID-19 has and is disrupting global health, economic, social and financial systems. The survival of small businesses has been a big concern as most small businesses have been seriously affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic has also affected the livelihood of a lot of people. Most small businesses are struggling to operate, generate revenues, and meet short-term cash obligations. Small businesses are currently faced with various challenges such as the inability to meet short-term cash obligations like salaries, and the potential of a total business shut down.

Not only do small business have to think about survival and cash flow, they also have to worry about providing support to their employees in this season.

There is really no easy answer on how small businesses can survive these turbulent times, there are however a few tips to implement and plan for the next few months.

1.        Don’t panic. 

More than ever before, it’s important not to panic. Remain calm even when cash is running out. This will ensure that you avoid making drastic decisions. If you run out of emotional support, don’t hesitate to ask for help.


2.    Tap into resources provided by government and financial institutions.

The government has set up various initiatives to support small business owners. A few banks have also come up with various initiatives. It’s important to be on the look out for these kind of initiatives and take advantage of them.


3.        Develop a three-month financial plan

The major expenses for most small businesses include employee salaries, office rent and utility bills. It’s important to pay attention to the critical things you spend money on and make a realistic decision on how to control and cut your spending for the next three months. You may want to speak to a finance expert to guide you with this.


You could perhaps freeze hiring any more full-time employees, and instead work on a project basis with freelancers. You could also consider downsizing your office, and using a co-working space to have more affordable and flexible payment terms.

4.        Find opportunities

This season may look very bleak but there are still opportunities that small businesses can tap into. Will your current business model survive the changes that will come from the COVID-19 pandemic?  It’s important to look for new ways to connect with your customers as well as reach out to new customers.


5.        Up skill your staff

This season presents a fantastic opportunity to train your staff on a wide range of skills that would make them more productive and efficient. There are numerous online courses that are quite affordable. Look for courses and resources that match your needs and your budget in this season.
