IMMUNE SYSTEM & SLEEP: THE EFFECTS
According
to a recent research carried out in Germany by scientists, the result shows
that the amount of sleep a person gets significantly affects the immune system.
This goes a long way to prove the importance of having a good sleep. effect
A lot of us are caught up in the circle of our daily activities that we forget
or in most case downplay the importance of a good sleep in our lives. With the
covid-19 pandemic ravaging the world today, it is imperative to understand that
a person with a strong immune system stands a better chance of surviving the
virus compared to a person with a weak immune system. Your immune system is
your body’s defense mechanism that helps fight virus and sickness from
penetrating and spreading into the body’s internal organs. Effect
The
effect of sleep in boosting your immune system cannot be overemphasized and
this is a long ancient secret, attributed and practiced in the Chinese culture.
This has also been illustrated in many quotes around the world. Most notably
are “Sleep is the best medicine” by Dalai Lama and “Think in the morning, Act in
the noon, Eat in the evening, Sleep in the night” by William Blake.
According
to a publication by Mayo Clinic, an online clinic in response to a question
posed to its Medical Director Eric J. Olson, it wrote – “lack of sleep can
affect your immune system. Studies show that people who don’t get quality sleep
or enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus,
such as a common cold virus. In addition, a lack of sleep can also affect how
fast you recover if you do get sick. During sleep, your immune system releases
proteins called Cytokines, some of which help promote sleep. It is important to
note that this cytokine need to increase when you have an infection or
inflammation, or when you’re under stress.
On the
other hand, sleep deprivation may decrease production of these protective
cytokines, also, infection-fighting antibodies and cells are reduced during
periods when you don’t get enough sleep, so your body needs sleep to fight
infectious diseases”
Presently, many countries of the world are locked down and we all are
collectively trying to fight the deadly covid-19, the only way we can save the
world and ourselves is to get as much rest and keep safe.
The
proper sleep recommended time frame by expert differs for adults, teenagers and
children. For adults, 7-8 hours of sleep is recommended, for teenager, 9-10
hours of sleep is appropriate while for children 10 hours or above is
recommended.
The
following are pitfalls of sleep deprivation on the immune system:
1. Early Death.
2. Risk of getting Cardiovascular disease.
3. Mental health challenge.
4. Financial mismanagement.
5. Lack of Good health.
