FLEET COMMONALITY AND AIRLINE OPERATIONS-The Panagora Blog

The concept of fleet commonality is a common concept in airline operations and ownership for flight operations .

'' Fleet commonality” means that most maintenance procedures are the same and the flight and cabin crew do not require significant additional training to fly the aircraft.

For example an airline like Qantas has a fleet commonality for operating Boeing 747's .QANTAS had operated 747 aircraft since early 1970s and bought 747–400s in the 1990s. Buying the 747–400ER allowed them to operate  long direct routes with good loads while maintaining fleet commonality with the rest of their 747s which they previously owned.

Fleet commonality allows the particular airline to share its technology across its products. For example on the Boeing 747-ER,the fuel tanks which enabled the Extended Range long route travel were manufactured in the UK by Marshall Aerospace in Cambridge. Marshall used the same technology to make additional fuel tanks for other aircraft, such as the Boeing P-8 Poseidon (which has sold 122 examples, rather more than the 747–400ER. These tanks are fitted in the cargo space and can be removed to carry more cargo (and less fuel) if the operator wishes to do so. The fuselage and structure of the 747–400ER are strengthened compared to the standard 747–400 to handle the extra weight of fuel, cargo and passengers.

Airlines normally concentrate their operations on a particular type of fleet to enable them control maintenance costs for spare parts, repairs, training and ownership thus the growing preponderance of fleet commonality in many airline operations around the world.
