Why does potassium chloride stop the heart?

KCl is the salt in the suicide machine invented by Jack Kevorkian. Regardless of your opinion on that, its now what is used in the lethal injection to execute killers. Why? It is cheap and actually more humane.

How does it work?

This is because potassium sends signals to every muscle in the body to contract. The heart is the perfect target.

When excess potassium reaches the heart, it disrupts the delicate balance of sodium and potassium ions that keep the heart beating. The heart begins beating irregularly - and then stops beating completely.

Every cell contains a proper ratio of sodium and potassium and cells which don’t, die instantly. The sodium-potassium ATP driven pump (it’s a protein machine that ensures K+ and Na+ are in balance. But if you mess this up, bye.

Sodium doesn’t do this. Sodium makes you hypertensive and you die slowly (from high blood pressure).

Potassium (it has nothing to do with chloride) increases the positive charge in every cell. That means, you have no electrochemical homeostasis.

Every cell, not just cardiac cells, brain, kidney, all cells will die but the heart, goes first. And that’s why it kills.
