Managing the new Routine of working from Home in the Pandemic !

 1. MAINTAIN YOUR MORNING ROUTINE.

Without the hassles associated with getting to the office on time, it can be tempting to sleep in or work in your pajamas. But your daily routine sets the tone for your workday – especially when you haven’t left the house. Try to continue your morning routine even though you’re not heading into the office. This might mean getting out of bed early, working out and taking a shower before 9 am.

2. SET A DAILY PLAN FOR YOUR WORKDAY – INCLUDING BREAKS.

Set a daily plan or to-do list for your workday (and stick to it) to stay motivated and productive while you work from home. Block off your day into chunks of time, this will help you be intentional about your tasks and work– and don’t forget to add time for breaks, too!

If you’re juggling multiple projects/tasks, schedule a block of time on your calendar for each one. Take 20-minute breaks between projects to get fresh air, stretch your legs, check social media, or play with your kids. It helps refresh and reset your brain.

3. APPORTION A DESIGNATED PLACE TO WORK.

Set up a designated space in your home to serve as your ‘office’. Try to make your ‘at-home office’ mirror your office workstation as closely as possible. It will help you get in the groove easily and feel more comfortable with the change.

Here are a few pro tips you should consider when selecting your new works-pace:

  • Router – consider the location of your router in your home. You may need your desk to be nearby for faster internet speed.

  • Background – You’ll likely be doing several video calls every week. Make sure the background of your work-space isn’t too distracting. Bonus tip: Always dress up for video calls. You don’t want to be caught without pants.

  • Space with a Door – if possible, choose a space with a door. If you have parents, partners, kids, or roommates at home, closing the door is a great “do not disturb” signal if you’re on an important call.

4. WORK-LIFE BALANCE

It’s hard to separate work and home. But when you’re remote, it’s essential to leave work at work. Set boundaries for yourself, so you can always leave work at “work.”

5. SCHEDULE DAILY PROGRESS MEETINGS WITH YOUR TEAM.

When your entire team is remote, it is vital to schedule short daily meetings to stay connected.

These meetings should not exceed 15 minutes (depending on the number of your team) and should take place every morning (usually right after people get to work). They should take place at the same time each day.

In these meetings, each team member shares:

  • What they did yesterday: Summarize what they worked on and accomplished.

  • What they will do today: What are their top tasks for the rest of the workday?

  • What potential roadblocks might prevent success: If there is anything preventing work from getting done, bring it up so it can get resolved.

6. STAY CONNECTED WITH VIDEO.

Working remotely can feel isolating, but video can help. Schedule video calls for regularly scheduled meetings. Or jump on a video call to have lunch with a coworker. Catch up on gist as you’d normally do during lunch break at work.

Getting to see your coworkers and talk to them ‘virtually in person’ adds some normalcy back into your workday.

7. BE ACTIVE!

When you’re working from home, you might be tempted to move from your desk to the couch/bed. But it’s imperative to move your body. Exercise is a mood booster and it reduces stress and anxiety. Schedule time for some physical activity into your day to get your blood pumping & clear your mind.

8. TAKE TIME FOR PROFESSIONAL/PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT.

Let’s be honest, you have a little more time on your hands and there are tons of opportunities for professional development from home. Sign up for an online certification or course. Read a marketing book. Now’s the time to learn something new.

9. CHECK-IN WITH YOUR TEAMMATES.

Most importantly, remember to check in with your teammates during the day. It doesn’t matter if you are the team lead or not, regular communication makes the work easier.

So, whether it’s a two-minute chat or a quick message of encouragement via WhatsApp, Telegram, or Instagram chat, be intentional about connecting with your coworkers. Remember, you are not alone. If you were thrust into remote working and now feel isolated, reach out to a coworker. They may feel the same way.

10. CELEBRATE WINS

In times like this, we need all the positivity we can get. Be deliberate and mindful to celebrate wins with your team – big and small. Share them via whatever communication medium your organization employs. Share them often.

Working from home is now the new normal. Take it one day at a time and remember that we’re all in this together.
